A traditional Scottish kilt outfits, also known as Highland dress, typically includes:

  • A kilt: a knee-length pleated garment made of tartan fabric, usually made of wool
  • A sporran: a pouch that hangs from the belt in front of the kilt, used as a pocket for small items
  • A sgian-dubh: a small dagger that is worn in the sock, with only the hilt visible
  • A shirt: usually a white or off-white shirt, sometimes with a lace jabot or ruffles
  • A jacket: typically a Prince Charlie or Argyll jacket, which are both tailored jackets worn with a vest
  • Hose and flashes: knee-high socks and decorative fabric strips that are worn at the top of the socks and match the tartan of the kilt
  • Shoes: either ghillie brogues (traditional Scottish shoes with no tongue and long laces that wrap around the ankle) or dress shoes
